My name is Phuntsok Bhutia. Phuntsok means ‘abundant, excellent” in my native Tibetan language. I am a Tibetan but was born a refugee in India. I grew up in India and recently moved to the United States. What tempted me to move to the United States, among other things, are the potential of opportunities and the promise of a brighter future. The pursuit of happiness is the story of all human being and the same pursuit brought me here.

Deeply rooted in the Buddhist culture, i tend to believe that I am a peace-loving and a compassionate person. I speak when I need to and prefer to listen more. I respect all religion, race and gender as I believe that deep down, we are all part of a family; the human family.

After coming to the United States I worked few menial jobs to make ends meet. Time here flies quickly and by the time I realized I had to do something towards my dream, years had passed. I sat down one day and evaluated my life, my situation and so forth, I came to the realization that a high school degree would be the first gate towards my pursuit of happiness. I believe once I complete the TASC tests, gain education through it and open that gate, new opportunities will come.

Upon that realization, my immediate action was to search for a good school; I asked people, googled and visited libraries to explore for opportunities that were available for undocumented immigrant like me. By a stroke of luck I came to learn about the LaGuardia Community College and their Bridge program. I applied immediately and got the admission.

I have been a dedicated student of the LaGuardia College’s Bridge to College and Careers: Health (PM) fall 2017. The past three months have been a very exciting part of my life and I look forward to learning more. I am thankful my classmates for making my life in school comfortable and welcoming. Deepest appreciation for my Professor Billy, for being a kind and great Instructor. I will be indebted to the LaGuardia College for the rest of my life for giving such a wonderful opportunity to me and many like me. I intend to take every opportunity to continue learning after I finish my TASC tests. I will keep exploring on ways to do so.
