All Environmental Science students should complete an internship in order to gain applied knowledge and experience in their chosen career area.  Students should begin to apply for summer internships in the Fall II semester before all internships are filled.

Internship Opportunities Include the Following:

Brooklyn Grange:

Brooklyn Grange is the leading rooftop farming and intensive green roofing business in the US. We operate the world’s largest rooftop soil farms, located on two roofs in New York City, and grow over 40,000 lbs of organically-cultivated produce per year. In addition to growing and distributing fresh local vegetables and herbs, Brooklyn Grange also provides urban farming and green roof consulting and installation services to clients worldwide, and we partner with numerous non-profit organizations throughout New York to promote healthy and strong local communities.  For internship information, visit the website here.

Lower East Side Ecology Center:

The Ecology Center offers free public compost collection and education, electronic waste recycling, stewardship of public open space, and environmental education. Our programs focus on offering opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about environmental issues facing NYC and to take responsibility for solving those problems.  For internship information, visit the website here.

Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP):

The Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) mission is to protect public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. Each summer, DEP welcomes college and graduate students majoring in a variety of fields, including engineering, computer science, environmental science, chemistry, biology, urban planning, and legal studies, to join our team. All summer interns have the opportunity to meet high-ranking staff, attend site visits, and more. Internships are available during the school year and the summer.

To complement the work experience, all summer undergraduate interns participate in a special seminar series that features top City officials presenting overviews of municipal government, specific agencies, and the latest issues confronting the City.  Internships are posted in the Spring by a number of city agencies including the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Office of Emergency Management.
