My name is Jenny Perez, As a LaGuardia Community College student, majoring in Biology, I have taken a number of courses that have helped me develop further intellectually. Right now I am majoring in biology because I want to become a doctor so I can help others who cannot help themselves. I am fascinated by the human body and wish to study how we can better others through medicine and research. I think the life and the knowledge of a person is something that nobody can take away.
I was born in La Vega, the Dominican Republic and moved nine years later to New York City. Manhattan is where my home base now resides. I have two siblings and I am the middle born. When I first came to New York the first school that I went to was Salomé Ureña de Henríquez for six graders. Once there, I started learning English and developing my skills in science. One lasting experience that really shaped who I am happened while I was still in the Dominican Republic. I was robbed and almost killed when I was seven years old because of a necklace. While frightening, this experience made me the strong and stable woman that I am today. While being in New York proved to be a challenge when I finally settled here, I still love to travel and explore new places. I cultivated my love of traveling and adventure through my family and our trips together to the mountains of my country when I was little; there I learned about humans and the environment that we live in today. Moving to New York was a move that marked many changes in my life because I left my friends and my family members as well the house that I grew up in. The High school that I went to was Bayard Rustin Educational Complex in midtown Manhattan. I graduated with honors, and I also formed part of a drummer’s band at the school. Right now I am a student at La Guardia Community College, majoring in biology, with future plans of becoming a doctor. After finishing LaGuardia, I plan to transfer to Hunter College or City College to finish my bachelor’s degree.
