TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I teach from a learner-centered model informed by adult educators Stephen Brookfield, Myles Horton, Paulo Friere, and Eduard Lindeman. and believe in transformative learning beginning with the experiences of students.  As an adult educator, I understand that experiential and hands-on learning is crucial and attempt to make my classrooms interactive, experiential, and reflective.

DIVERSIFIED INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS

My classes utilize multiple learning approaches including, but not limited to: small group instruction, paired learning, class lecture, student goal setting, e-portfolio development, role-playing, field trips, video showing and creation, intensive reading and writing. Upper level courses include undergraduate research projects.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Students in upper level courses (HUN180, etc.) will learn the initial stages of ethnographic research while exploring a NYC community of their choice. Undergraduate research theoretical frameworks, research design, methods and analysis are discussed. As a teaching tool, undergraduate research development, execution, presentation and publishing are encouraged.

ONLINE APPROACHES

Online classes provide alternative, learner-centered options for many non-traditional students especially students who are employed full-time and are raising families. Most semesters I teach at least one online class which integrates a variety of tools: video, discussion board, email, tele-conferencing, online reading, writing and testing. This is an independent learning yet online community building experience in communication.
