Dr. Joni Schwartz is a Professor of Communication Studies in the Department of Humanities at LaGuardia Community College, The City University of New York. She is a social activist and the developer of three community adult education centers in NYC: Turning Point, The Downtown Learning Center, and Bethlehem GED Program, as well as the former education director at Literacy Partners, Inc.  Her research as coordinator of the Black Male Initiative (BMI) at New York City College of Technology included: the exploration of undergraduate research (UR)in STEM specifically faculty/student mentoring relationships. Additional research foci include the engagement of Young Men of Color in learning, media ecology, high school push-outs and the formerly incarcerated  and their re-engagement in higher education. In 2012, she co-produced a documentary entitled “A New Normal:Young Men of Color, Trauma & Engagement in Learning" through a CUNY Cultural Diversity Grant and is now working on a second documentary about incarceration and learning. She is the recipient of the The Alexander N. Charters Adult Education Research Grant, several PSC CUNY Grants and the Stewart Travel Grant. Her work is published in the Adult Education Quarterly, Science Education, The International Journal of Science in Society, Adult Learning Journal, and The Journal of Research and Practice for Adult Literacy, Secondary, and Basic Education. She is co-editor for two volumes in the New Directions in the Jossey-Bass series: Swimming Upstream and General Editor for Dialogues in Social Justice: An Adult Education Journal. Dr. Schwartz is co-editor for the national online peer review journal, Dialogues in Social Justice: An Adult Education Journal sponsored by the University of North Carolina.

     Her book is co-edited with John R. Chaney, Race, Education and Renintegrating Formerly Incarcerated Citizens published by Lexington Press. Counterspaces: After Incarceration, a documentary about reentry and education, was released in Spring of 2018. Her most recent publication is Learning to Disclose: A Journey of Transracial Adoption written with her daugher, Rebecca Schwartz was published in November of 2020.
