"Evolving"
“It’s your Attitude not your Aptitude which determines your Altitude”, born and raised in the South Bronx I’ve grown a great passion for unraveling myself through education. In 2015 I graduated from the Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts located on Gun hill Rd. which is also in the Bronx. While focusing primarily on my success I impressively graduated from my high school at the top of my class and received a New York City Merit Award. Before attending college I was unsure of major to study and that discouraged me, I than began started working at my first job as a cashier at Checkers. Working in fast food was one of hardest things I had to do because it required me to work a great amount of hours before acquiring sufficient funds. With little to no doubt I was sure I needed to go back to school and nourish my mind. I then applied to LaGuardia Community College as a Liberal Arts Major to eventually further my education and become a psychology major. This quotation closely represents my current and past educational experience, being that I am new to college. I’ve grown to realize my capabilities and I am accepting of my responsibilities.
For the years I spent in high school I was driven, courageous and motivated which I plan to be in college as well. I joined the girls track team for a total of ten seasons. Another sport that I greatly enjoyed was volleyball, this was only for one season but my teammates and I won our division championship, nothing felt greater then training hard, staying focused and eventually winning. Throughout my college career I plan on staying focused and occupying my free time with not only sports but also social gatherings or work. I am currently working as Student Ambassador for ASAP, to acquire more skills before working as a Peer-Advisor for the Psychology department. . During my high school experience, I also volunteered in a Peer Mediation program, the student council, senior committee, yearbook club as stepping stones for my college resume. While taking on so many responsibilities I prepared myself to be career driven.
Unlike a lot of the other students apart of my senior class I was focused on a greater agenda and it showed, before the beginning of my 12th grade year I was offered a seat in an advanced placement class. AP English prepared me for the long nights studying and the incredibly hard passages. Having set goals and willpower I was determined to pass the class and attend college. Studying hard on a daily basis, attending track practice, and taking an AP English class changed me into a maturing young adult. As time passed I’ve grown to be more productive and most importantly I have a positive attitude. Having a positive attitude led me to more satisfying and fulfilling outcomes. While attending LaGuardia I hope to further my education and also learn from the life experiences that will eventually arise. My journey at LaGuardia has just begun and after completing my first semester I was awarded a Dean’s List award and offered honors classes. By accomplishing so much in just the beginning of my voyage I am fulfilled and motivated, already looking forward to Graduation day.

Hey Shannel!
Love your story! It was exciting to read all you have accomplished. I commend you for not being ashamed of success especially in high school when peer pressure is at its highest. I love that you were so active in your school and hope you can transfer that over to being actively involved on campus here at LaGuardia. One of the main contributions to my success at LaGuardia was being so involved in as much as I could. It was amazing all the people I got to network with, programs I got to be involved in, and long life connections as well as friendships which really jump started my Senior college experience.
Take advantage of all LaGuardia has to offer! It was the best decision I ever made to study liberal arts. It truly gave me a clearer perspective on what I wanted to do after I graduated. It is so cool that you were involved in peer mediation. In high school I was apart of the conflict mediation team which jolted my love for counseling and helping students. You'll be surprised in all you can learn about yourself by just being active in different school programs. I look forward to learning more about you and seeing your journey unfold.
All the best, keep up the great work Shannel!
