Personal Statement

Hello, I am Solaine Coquillon-Master. I came to the United States from Haiti in 1991, at the age of 11. I am a Liberal Arts: Math & Science major at LaGuardia Community College. I am a first generation college student creating a path for my daughter and my younger family members to follow. In my life, I have overcome life changing challenges by staying focused and being self driven. As a child, I was not taught the value of having a proper education; it was not until my mid twenties I realized how difficult it was to live a decent life without a college degree. It is this reality which drives me to focus on higher education and higher work experience. In 2007, I made a decion to go back to school: I  graduated from the Allen School with a certificate as a Medical Assistant. During my training, I learned phlebotomy, EKG, Urinalysis and other medical and office related duties. Upon completion of my internship, I was hired as an assistant to the practice’s OB/GYN. I worked there for about two months until the doctor moved to a different location and I decided to further my education. After leaving the doctor’s office, I decided to take another step by obtaining a Home Health Aide certification.  During my employment at the Home Health Aide agency, I made the call to LaGuardia Community College. Now I’m one step closer to achieving my life’s goals.
