Welcome!!!

Welcome to the LaGuardia Co-Curricular Activity ePortfolio, created by the Student Success Mentors (SSMs in short). We SSMs are current students or alumni of LaGuardia Community College who now help other students, especially freshmen, adjust to college life and make college a more fulfilling experience.

In this ePortfolio, we will update you with all the events that happen in LaGuardia. It will be updated weekly every Monday, so check often!

We will not only talk about events that happen in LaGuardia, we will tell you about things that happen around the campus, as well as things that happen around New York City! We will also introduce you to the different student organizations that you can benefit a lot from while having a great time doing so.

There are many types of events and organizations: some help you relax and have fun, some help you develop your academic and professional skills, some expose you to many different things in New York that you might not know about. In short, there is something for everyone in LaGuardia!

Remember, college is not just "go to class, do homework, take tests, study, repeat." College is also about meeting a lot of new people, discovering new places, and seeing everything in a different light.

If you would like to know more, please look through this ePortfolio. You can also email is through the Contact Us page.

Why should I participate in Co-Curricular Activities?

1: You get to meet a lot of people!

When you join a club, attend a workshop, go to an event, or even when you go find help for anything you need, you will meet a lot of people. The more people you know, the more doors will open for you in the future.

A person you meet in an event may not just end up a great friend, but also provide you a lot of useful information about your major and the four-year college you wanted to get into. The speaker of a seminar you attended could bring out the confidence in you that you never knew you had. The people in the club you just joined could show you a lot of things that you never knew. The people in that program or organization you became a part of could one day hook you up with an awesome job.

The possibilities are endless, and all you simply have to do is talk with people!

2: It helps you use your time more wisely

Joining more things can help me use my time better? It sounds like a contradiction: add more stuff to my schedule in order to not procrastinate. If you think about it, it makes sense. If you have a lot of free time, you tend to procrastinate because you think that you have all the time in the world. If, however, you add more things to your schedule, you will feel that the free time you do have left over becomes more precious, and you would not procrastinate.

3: It makes college less boring and painful!

Most important of all, co-curricular activities make college a lot more interesting and smoother. Again, college is not just "go to class, do homework, take tests, study, repeat." College is also about meeting a lot of new people, discovering new places, and seeing everything in a different light.

College is hard no matter where you go, but co-curricular activities make it better because it makes you stronger and happier!

4: Part of your tuition fee pays for these activities and organizations

A part of your tuition money actually goes into clubs, programs, services, and facilities such as gyms and the pool. Since you pay for it, you might as well take advantage of it! Most of these are completely free for LaGuardia Students too!
