This is Tomo Imamichi, Associate Professor of Psychology. I am full-time at LaGuardia since the Fall of 2012, and Affiliate Faculty and current co-chair at the PhD Envrionmental Psychology sub-program at the Graduate Center. Previously I have been adjuncting at various CUNY campuses teaching courses such as General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality, Social Psychology, Cultural Psychology, and Personal Adjustment. In all of my courses I hope to help cultivate critical thinking, scientific literacy and multiple perspectives: https://youtu.be/OKWCHBFEsI8
I received my PhD from the City University of New York- Graduate Center in Environmental Psychology. Environmental Psychology studies the relationships between organisms and their environments. A brief introduction to Environmental Psychology can be found in this video:  https://youtu.be/E_pfFjd13T0. My dissertation was on the transformations of person-environment relationships by studying marathon runners- the changes they undergo during training (as they are cultivating their bodies) and racing (as they are spending their bodies). A brief summary and a recent project can be found in a video: Twenty Minutes on a Treadmill: https://youtu.be/c5tupF0pTF4
My interest within Environmental Psychology is in Environmental Competence- the ability to deal effectively with one's surroundings. Environmental competence can be studied by looking how people deal with challenging environments and/or tasks, such as how newcomers to New York City (or LaGuardia) deal with their new environments; how marathon runners deal with the challenges to train for and run in a marathon; how people deal with disasters when their ordinary lives are disrupted. By examining environmental competence we may find what personal skills, tools and resources are important in helping us interact more effectively with our surroundings, and create more satisfying, user-friendly, socially and environmentally responsible, and healthier environments.
Other interests include running, Karate, minimalism (reducing consumption), existentialism (as I can be seen practicing in the picture above) and making short YouTube videos inspired by remote learning:
